Easter in Sicily

The Holy Week

The Easter week is one of the most eagerly-awaited religious popular events in Sicily and it is characterised by many and diverse events and traditions.
Visiting Trapani during the Holy Week you can live a series of touching and unique processions and religious representations that have been playing for over 400 years.
On Good Friday the entire city stops: it is the day of “a nisciuta“ (the exit of the sacred groups from the “Chiesa del Purgatorio - Purgatory Church”) which marks the beginning of the Processione dei misteri di Trapani (Procession of the Mysteries of Trapani).
It’s the event which attracts every year tourists from all over the world. For 24 hours the Processione dei misteri di Trapani winds its way through the streets of the city, giving visitors and believers moments of great emotion and intense religiosity. The twenty Sacred Groups of Mysteries tell the Death and Passion of Christ and are carried on the shoulders of the bearers on the notes of several funeral marches. Really impressive moments, especially if they are experienced during the night when the Sacred Groups pass through the Old Town, in a deafening silence interrupted only by the sound of mourning drums: those who have participated, even only once, will never forget this particular atmosphere. The Mysteries of Trapani are not an event but “the Event”.
Other communities also live intensely the Holy Week, such as Erice, in the province of Trapani. If you want to combine traditions, culture and nature, Easter is a great time to visit Sicily.
